Our first day back in a gym after years not going.
Delia is a great gym buddy, and helped me feel more confident and less self-conscious adjusting the machines for my shortness and making sure I used them right. Also she never acts embarrassed by me; a problem that stymies a lot of couples where one person is more fit or attractive than the other, or fits in better in a gym environment.
I am nowhere near a gym bunny and never have been (unless you count that time I got pretty into Pilates), but for the entirety of our relationship, I’ve loved and valued Delia’s interest, willingness, and time invested in fitness, and admired / been in awe of how consistently hard she’s worked at it when she goes to the gym. And how she has often tolerated me tagging along, but spending most of the time she’s sweating on a stairmaster by napping on stretch mats listening to new age music, taking luxurious long showers, etc.
Anyway … I’m super glad she signed us up for memberships again. I feel like compatibility with “working out” (or whatever you call it or are drawn to with physical fitness) is super important. We are not twins in body types or desired workouts, but there is the exact right kind of overlap so neither of us feels alone or sabotaged by the other, but instead inspired, affirmed and encouraged.
It is important to have a partner who cares about their health and fitness. I’m not always a good partner in that way, so it makes me really happy Delia never shames me about that and just always has the door open for me to do better, one little step at a time, and never makes me feel like it’s too late.
